Westport boasts an exemplary public school system. The entire community is included in the schooling enterprise and working with teachers, students and administrators on leadership councils to continually improve the quality of education, Westport is committed to excellence.

Westport has five elementary schools (grades K-5), two middle schools (grades 5-8) and one high school (grades 9-12). Special education programs are available at all grade levels for eligible students. Every school has a gifted students program teacher as well as an enriched language arts study program. The current student population stands at approximately 5,500 for grades K through 12.

Students in elementary, middle and high school score above the state averages, and a host of advanced placement courses are available at the high school level. Ongoing technological improvements have made the Internet now accessible to classrooms. The Board of Education and the community will provide the physical and financial resources that the staff will need to transform the schools to 21st century standards.

Elementary Schools
The average class size is 22 students with an emphasis on individualized attention. Students are provided with an enriched language arts program to build up reading and writing skills. Also part of the core curriculum are art, music, physical education and computers.

Middle Schools
Students in the middle schools are taught by distinguished team teaching programs for language, arts, social studies, science and math. Foreign language is introduced in the fifth grade. Activities and programs include intramural sports, clubs and co-curricular music, drama and literary activities as well as a student advocacy program.

Staples High School
Staples High School provides a wide range of curriculum offerings as well as extra-curricular activities and programs. The high school students consistently win honors for their scholastic achievements, athletic skills, drama and music productions and their literary work. Staples Players, known for its professional drama and musical productions, has produced several Broadway stars over the years. The school also fields 37 interscholastic athletic teams.
